Assassin’s Creed DS

23 01 2008

Assassin’s Creed will without a doubt be coming to DS.

I emailed Ubisoft and they told me that. They also said “It will be on sale in March”.

I am still a little skeptical about this though. It’ll probably be knocked back but…

At least we know its coming!!!

PC Game: Game Tycoon

21 01 2008

This is probably going to be a very short review.

Cheap game, cheap gameplay.

I guess you get what you pay for.

Its ok for the first  hour or so but it can get boring easily.

The aim of the game is to create your very own game. It is set in 1982 and progresses through the years. First of all you have to design a game engine, saying what it should be able to do and what features it should have. You then go down to the university and hire some programmers and set them to work on your game engine. When that’s done you take the engine and go to the Media Centre and find out what publishers are looking for games and what genre. To start with you’ll only want to pick a low minimum rating and try to look for some good pay. Next you go design your game. Then hire art designers and musicians from the university. The game keeps progressing like this and is quite slow. You are in rivalry with your two friends’ companies.

Being honest, I don’t think its worth installing this game. It’s a bit of a waste of 250mb.

Its ok for cheap, short lasting entertainment.

Graphics - 5/10 - Mediocre.

Gameplay - 7/10 - Its got a good concept but the gameplay is a little tedious and slow.

Controls - 6/10 - Point and Click, Nothing fancy.

Overall - 6/10 - 62% - Room for a lot of improvement.

PC Game: Halo 2

17 01 2008

As with all new PC games Halo 2 comes with hefty specs. Not glasses, requirements that your computer needs to meet to run this game.

It is a Windows Vista  exclusive title that requires at least 1gb of RAM and at least 7gb free hard drive space.

Now onto the actual game.

The graphics… Amazing!

They could hardly be better. Well maybe that’s a bit of an overstatement, but some of the best graphics I’ve seen in a while.

Gameplay… Brilliant!

You’ve got to love sniping the bad guys in the centre of the forehead. The storyline is reasonable and the campaign is pretty short. But it is still gripping. Great stuff Bungie.

Controls… Fantastic!

Its not too hard to remember the controls for keyboard/mouse and they work great. Though it would probably be even easier / better with a 360 Controller for windows PC’s.

Online… OMG!

This is the section I really wanted to write. The online is so fun, even without a Windows LIVE Gold account you can still play online, you only need a free (silver) account. Capture the Flag has to be the most engaging, fun online game concept ever, and the Halo series puts it to excellent use! (as does Team Fortress 2, review coming soon) There are also other online modes which are just as fun as Capture the Flag. Sniping bad guys in the campaign may be fun but sniping another guy online… this just takes fun to a new level!

Final Scores

Gameplay: 9/10

PC Shooter: Crysis

4 01 2008

Crysis was the first thing in mind when I got a new computer. It’s a great game, but sadly has some big flaws..

The game takes place in year 2020 where a group of American researchers found an amazing discovery. Though, they are taken captive in the Philippine Sea by North Koreans. You, Jake Dunn (Codename Nomad) are equipped with a special suit that can adapt into any situation while on a mission to rescue the researchers. But soon, a war starts against the North Koreans. As you progress through the story, you discover extraterrestrial life and you must defeat them. Throughout the game, you go through many hostile environments, like an alien spacecraft in zero gravity, the Korean jungles, the ice sphere (a frozen version of the jungle), and much more. There are 8 guns in single player mode, and more in multi player. This is what I think of the game:

Graphics: 8/10

The graphics are amazing in this game, and it looks like someone just put the jungles, and everywhere else in a little CD. Problem is, to see those graphics, you need a super powerful computer. It even lags on a 5.9 grade PC, so I recommend playing on Medium graphics. In other words, it’s almost impossible to play on very high graphics without mass frame lag.

Sounds: 7/10

Sound effects were realistic. Every gunshot, every explosion made it feel like I’m in the action. The music was rather boring (most of it is silence with random sounds to make it a little scary, and a couple sound like the stuff you’d find in those war movies like Saving Private Ryan), which gave me the low rating. The dialog is very original, and some of it is a bit humorous.

Gameplay: 9/10

The game is very interactive, as you can pick up almost every object lying around (I like to throw keyboards at Koreans). The AI is smart, and even walking through the grass and making the slightest noise can make the enemies notice you. What adds to the game is the nanosuit. You can use armor mode (the default mode), which uses suit energy as a substitution for health; You have speed mode, which makes you walk faster, and sprint faster at the cost of suit energy; strength mode, which reduces gun recoil, makes you jump higher, and throw stuff further; and cloak mode, which makes you invisible at the cost of energy. The game has a bit of replay value due to how much you can do to the environment, and do objectives in different ways. Some levels have major bugs, which can be frustrating (It took me 6 times to complete a section of a level since the enemies froze and wouldn’t die), and the game is a little shorter than expected (Likely because I am used to 40 hour RPGs). Luckily, it’s going to be a trilogy. There are many attachments to put on your weapons to make them stronger and more accurate than they are. The multiplayer is very good, and I am spending a lot of time on it. It uses an objective style format requiring you to capture objective points to make weapons of mass destruction.

Controls: 9/10

The controls are 10 since this is my first FPS on PC. But I loved the controls. They are the default of most shooters. F to interact with things, WASD format, point and click shooting, and that simple stuff. Only problem is that they never implemented a function to hold your breath. Sometimes you need to snipe enemies in the game.

Overall, this game was very good, and I am hoping that you pick this game up, because it is PC shooter of the year, and it’s better than Halo.

Wii Game: Super Mario Galaxy

2 01 2008

This review has been a long time in coming. Probably because I’ve been playing the game instead of reviewing it, so far i’m on my 13th star out of 120 I think. If you think this review will have some negative parts that you could annoy your nintendo fanboy friend with then think again.

WARNING: THERE MAY BE SPOILERS BELOW!

This really is an excellent game, if you have a Wii then you won’t want to miss this game. It is unlike all other Wii games, and unlike all other Mario games too. You may think Mario is just the same game repeated with better graphics. If you do think this then you need to try different versions of Mario. In the beginning he was 2D and extremely pixilated now he’s 3D and looks great. So in the beginning Mario could only jump on the bad guys and get to the end of the stage. This has all changed, he can jump, spin and fire star bits at the enemy and instead of getting to the end of a flat stage he can go off course and venture east or west if you want him to.

Now down to the storyline and basic gameplay. So I will now admit the Bowser kidnapping Peach story is long past its sell-by-date. Bowser comes along with his airships and takes the whole castle, you are trying to save Peach and have just gotten to the castle so you get taken too but instead of ending up with Peach and Bowser you instead end up with a girl/woman named Rosalina and her star shaped luma friends. She and the luma want to help you find Peach so they allow you use of their observatory that uses the power of stars to send you to different galaxies. The trouble is Bowser has already stolen most of these stars and is abusing them or using them for evil. So it is your job to go into space and get the stars.

Obviously there is no online play, that’d be a little wierd in a Mario game, I mean what could you do?

This game is amazing, so if you don’t feel like playing Super Mario Galaxy to rescue Peach then do it to see what the Wii can really do. This is the best game I’ve played on the Wii so far and I expect it will stay that way for a long time.

Above: One of the first bosses in the game, you have to climb to the top of him then… I won’t spoil this game anymore.

Graphics - 10/10

Gameplay - 10/10

Controls - 10/10 - Sorry I didn’t mention controls in the review, its A to jump, B to fire star bits, shake remote to spin and jump and Z (on nunchuk) to do a ground pound.

Overall - 10/10

PS3 Game: Motorstorm

2 01 2008

Motorstorm is a really nice offroad racing game for ps3. The races take place in Monument Valley, which is a beautiful setting. You can choose out of 7 types of vehicles: trucks, motorcycles, quads, jeeps, sportscars, etc. There are 8 tracks, all with there own pros and cons. There’s only one racetype, the simplicity: WIN. That’s why motorstorm isn’t perfect. It gets really repetitive after a while. Don’t expect a simulator, the game is very arcade because of the boost. You have unlimited boost but there’s a small meter that fills. When it’s at the maximum, your car explodes. This shows the great graphics and physics of the game. The controls are a bit different from other games, you use R2 and L2 to excellerate and brake. The X button is for boost. Steering is with the left analoge stick, or you can use the tilt function, but that’s mission imposible. The offline mode can keep you busy for a week (Maybe two if you’re a hardcore racing fan.).

Online:

The multiplayer mode is the same as the offline mode. You set up your own game, you choose your map and vehicles and the number of players (maximum 12). The servers work really good.. The only drawback is the waiting time. Sometimes it’s like people just don’t want to join your game..

Motorstorm is a very good game but it misses something. I hope that they will add some racingmodes in the second game. Buy this game after you’ve finished resistance and call of duty.

Graphics: 9.5/10

Gameplay: 8/10 (’low’ score because it’s repetitive)

Overall: 83%

+ Arcade racing, graphics, physics

-Repetitive,long loading times when selecting vehicle
